Rhytidectomy (facelift)
True beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes

A facelift (technically called ‘rhytidectomy’) enables the signs of crono-aging (ptosis of the skin, ptosis and reabsorption of fat, ptosis of the muscles and ligaments) to be corrected. This correction is obtained through lifting and moving the fascia, muscles, fat and skin of the face and neck. Under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with medical sedation, an incision is made from the temporal area down to and around the ear. The incision then passes through the fold behind the ear and finishes in the temporal area inside the hairline. The skin is loosened from the deeper tissues (SMAS – superficial muscular aponeurotic system), which are pleated or partially removed and then firmly anchored higher up and/or further back. Excess skin is then removed so that the skin sutures are not under any tension. The scars are usually barely visible as they are hidden in areas out of sight.

SIDE-EFFECTS (ALSO TEMPORARY)
Pain and swelling for several days, controllable with medication. At the end of the procedure drainage tubes are left in place, and removed 24 hours later. Possible risks are haematoma (accumulation of blood that very rarely requires surgical drainage), seroma (accumulation of serous fluid that is resolved by draining it through part of the wound). Partial cutaneous necrosis can occur, although very rarely, and the skin heals by secondary intention. Nervous lesions: the facial nerve may be inadvertently damaged, sometimes only partially. It is extremely rare to have a paresis or paralysis that affects facial movement.
PRECAUTIONS AFTER TREATMENT
Avoid intense physical activity (including sexual) for 2 weeks after the procedure, avoid sunlight exposure
PRECAUTIONS BEFORE TREATMENT
No anticoagulant or antiaggregant medications for at least 4 days before the procedure; stop smoking
