Smartlifting
True beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes

The facial aging process is mainly characterised by the reabsorption of adipose tissue located under the skin, and photo-aging which manifests in skin blemishes, wrinkles and a yellow-grey look to the skin (loss of luminosity). Smartlifting seeks to correct both these aging processes by combining lipofilling treatment with fractional ablative resurfacing of the face. Lipofilling consists of the removal of fat from a body area (inner knee, abdomen, hip), which is then centrifuged to eliminate serum and blood residues, and implanted where needed using a small cannula. Resurfacing (see the relevant section) removes a large part of the skin surface, causing it to contract and stimulating production of new collagen. The centrifuged fat also contains many stem cells, and these are transferred with the implant. Smartlifting therefore not only recreates the facial shape which has been lost with the passage of time (through lipofilling) and causes a very obvious improvement in the quality of the skin (through fractional ablative resurfacing), but it also stimulates more longlasting results through the implant of the stem cells. These will in fact be transformed into the type of cells that are most lacking in that area, restoring their number and function. The face does not appear ‘pulled’, but naturally rejuvenated and with its shape restored.

TYPE OF TREATMENT
Lipofilling + fractional ablative resurfacing
INFORMED CONSENT REQUIRED
Yes
TECHNOLOGY USED
Fractional ablative ultrapulse CO2 laser for resurfacing, and centrifuge for preparation of the implant fat
LENGTH OF EACH TREATMENT
 1 – 1,5 hours
NUMBER OF TREATMENTS
1 (sometimes a second fat implant may be necessary as its reabsorption is very variable)
TIME BETWEEN TREATMENTS
At least 3 months if a second treatment is necessary
TYPE OF ANAESTHETIC
Local+ Topical + Sedation
SIDE-EFFECTS (ALSO TEMPORARY)
Swelling and some bruising for a few days after the fat implant. Small scabs after resurfacing. Swelling and minimal serum production for 2 days after resurfacing
PRECAUTIONS BEFORE TREATMENT
The patient must not be suntanned and must avoid sun exposure and UV lamp exposure for at least 30 days before treatment. The patient must take antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal medicines starting the day before treatment. If the patient is a dark phototype, a lightening solution must be applied to the face for 4 weeks before treatment
PRECAUTIONS AFTER TREATMENT
The patient must continue to regularly take the prescribed drugs, and apply an ointment to the face frequently for the first 5-6 days after treatment, in order to facilitate scab detachment. The patient must NOT visit geographical areas with high UV irradiation for 2-3 months after treatment, and in any case must frequently apply SPF 50+ sun protection for the same length of time
