The Nd:YAG laser (1064nm) is the medical laser that penetrates most deeply into the skin. This means it can reach dark tattoo pigment granules and blood vessels located in the deeper layers of the skin. Tattoo-removal is obtained through the liberation of high energies in billionths of a second (nanoseconds) while coagulation of blood vessels is obtained through impulses of a much longer duration (milliseconds). In the first case the pigment is fragmented and then eliminated by mastocytes, while in the second case the energy emitted cases the coagulation of the blood vessel. Wider diameter and deeper located blood vessels require longer impulses and higher energy. The Nd:YAG long pulse laser is the only one that offers good results in the treatment of lower limb capillaries. It is sometimes used in treating angiomas and larger blood vessels on the face.
